Priority Maintenance needs for the Main House
There are 5 priority items that we need help with.
- The kitchen counter top.
- The stove gas line.
- The hole under the bathtub.
- The hole in the ceiling.
- The outside toilet.
1. The Kitchen Counter top
The existing counter top is old and pealing off. It is functional, but needs an upgrade.
It would be great if a new counter top could be installed. There is lots of good quality wood available here in Mongu. A skilled carpenter can make a lovely wooden counter top. Otherwise, sourcing stone counter tops from Lusaka is possible, but quite costly.
2. The Stove gas line
We are super grateful to have a new stove that supporters helped us to purchase. However, the placement of the stove in the new house in Mongu makes it really difficult to connect the gas line safely/properly.
Currently, I have managed to install the gas bottle outside and run the gas pipe through the wall and cabinets to the stove. The thing is though, it runs through a doorway (munyako in siLozi) which means the pipe lies on the ground.
It would be so helpful if we could get a more secure gas line installed that goes underground or over the doorway. I am not sure what proper gas protocols for safe installation. I reckon if we could get this pipe (or a copper pipe) under the floor, that would solve our current problem.
3. The Hole under the bathtub
It would be super helpful to have this hole under the bathtub closed up properly. This is an entrance-way for many cockroaches and mosquitoes (and who knows what else?) to enter our home.
Also, the plumbing that comes out of the hole would be so much neater and more practical if it could run under the bath to the washing machine. In addition to this, it would be great if a waste-water pipe could be installed under the bath for the washing machine waste water.
4. The hole in the ceiling
I have temporarily managed to close up this hole with a piece of cardboard. It would be so helpful if we could have this hole closed up with a functioning trapdoor.
5. The Outside Toilet
Since the main house only has one toilet which is in the bathroom, having a second toilet is a crucial part of a 3-bedroom house. The outside toilet clearly needs a facelift.
This toilet needs a good paint, some floor tiles, and a new flush reservoir. The door also needs some love. The door is barely attached to the hinges.

The cupboards themselves could do with a coat of paint and some attention. However, the counter top is the main culprit. It would be great if we could get a new counter top.

A hole in the ceiling!
When we arrived, we found the ceiling trapdoor is missing – it was just a gaping hole!
An ugly hole in the bathroom
The bathtub has a huge, ugly hole in the wall where cockroaches, mosquitos, mice, rats, and I am sure even dogs can enter the house.
There is a great need for maintenance to be done on this hole in the wall. Whatever attmepts were made to close this hole in the past have long ago deteriorated.
Since we are outside already, let me show you the outside toilet that also needs some upgrades.
The outside toilet
At least it is not a long-drop. But it is long overdue for some paint on the walls and some tiles on the floors.
